Never Leave Your Pets in a Car!

Never leave pets in a car!

Never leave your dog alone in a car on a warm day. Many people still believe that it is ok to leave a dog in a car if the windows are left open or they are parked in the shade. But the truth is, it is still a very dangerous situation for the dog. A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even if it doesn’t feel that warm.

What to do if you see a dog in a car on a warm day.

In an emergency, Animal Care Services may not be able to attend quickly enough, and with no powers of entry, they need the police to assist in such a situation.

In that case, it is necessary to dial 911.

After dialing 911, establish the dog’s health/condition. If the situation becomes critical for the dog and the police are too far away/unable to attend, many people’s instinct will be to break into the car to free the dog. If you decide to do this, please be aware that without proper justification, this could be classed as criminal damage and, potentially, you may need to defend your actions in court. Make sure you tell the police what you intend to do, why, and take images/footage of the dog and the names and numbers of witnesses to the incident.

If you see a dog in a hot car displaying any signs of heatstroke, call 911 immediately! The dog may soon lose consciousness and experience internal organ failure.

Warning Signs of Heatstroke

  • Heavy panting
  • Excessive drooling
  • Lethargy, drowsy or lack of coordination
  • Collapse or vomiting

If dogs are too hot and are unable to reduce their body temperature by panting, they will develop heatstroke which can kill. If a dog is displaying any of these symptoms, move them to a cool, shaded area. Immediately douse the dog with cool, not cold water to avoid shock. If possible, you can also use wet towels or place the dog in the breeze of a fan. Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water. Continue to douse the dog with cool water until its’ breathing starts to settle but never so much that it begins to shiver. Transport the dog immediately to the nearest veterinary hospital.
